What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 25

Considerably one of the brightest and most talented emerging British stars, Jake Jon is an artist dedicated to creating inspirational music that carries the feeling of pure passion and hope, and positivity – enhanced by his soulful Hip Hop/Rap style.

Jake Jon is a Brighton based performer who honed his skills and made his name, or “brand”, as a singer/rapper, songwriter, producer, drummer, and performer over 15 years ago when he was performing in Gospel, choir and solo bands until he branched out as a Solo Artist. I would 100% recommend his music to fans of great performers like Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, and even The Kooks and Bob Marley (as rock and reggae styling and music has influenced Jakes Solo EP).

Music for Jake is a way of life. After an audition at the prestigious Berklee College of music, he was granted a full scholarship to study in Boston Massachusetts and was also awarded a Scholarship from The Brighton Institute of Modern Music through ‘The Stage’ Magazine- Jake Jon is definitely here to put his name on the map!

Jake has performed in venues like the Brighton Dome, The Royal Albert Hall and the Gardener Arts Centre, performing alongside artist like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer, Chad Smith, Rhymefest and more, and has worked with a number of great record labels and producers (giants like: Sony BMG, EMI and Universal Records & Publishing) including writing and recording sessions with Metrophonic and Cake Records.

Released late 2016/early 2017, Jake Jon’s Debut Single, The Arrival (BoomBoomPow) from the JakeJonMusic EP The Wake Up Call, has been inspiring audiences all around the globe. The way in which the lyrics are emphasised in the video gives you a clear understanding of who he is as an artist, what he is passionate about and the message he is sending; his music combines Rock, Soul, Gospel, and Reggae with vocal harmonies, life and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jake’s sound is reminiscent of 90’s rap icons, is easy to identify with and is especially great on days where you need some extra motivation and encouragement!

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 24

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the incredibly talented brother and sister urban pop duo, URBANO.

When first introduced to URBANO, a quote I have always liked came to mind; “Family, like branches on a tree, may grow in different directions, but its roots remain as one.” This seems to echo true within this family music group.

Strong family values and a remarkable bond are make up URBANO’s winning formula for great music. While growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, this brother (John Urbano) and sister (Ris Urbano) duo have branched out and explored many different areas in life. As a testament to their roots, they always managed to maintain an everlasting connection that closely bonded them together.

With strong support and positive reinforcement from their family, as well as a strong passion and focus for the arts, each were gifted with valuable tools to encourage and inspire their personal progress.

It is an unfortunate reality within the current music industry that artistic value is often overlooked in exchange for fast and overly safe cookie-cutter tracks. This pervading issue has the unfortunate result of discouraging innovation, uniqueness, imagination and creativity.

This certainly isn’t the case with URBANO, with the duo brilliantly fighting against this sentiment with their magnificently crafted sonic landscapes, searing rapping, and soothing vocal prowess.

As this duo grew up, they were regularly encouraged by their family to pursue their dreams. This undeniably supportive family infrastructure was very formative for John and Ris Urbano. With each shaping milestone, this duo was conditioned into growing into their full potential.

For John and Ris, their dedication and excitement for making music had informed their ambition for much of their development.

Since their inspiring start, URBANO has gradually been building notoriety, recently taking the urban pop music scene by storm. Showcasing their impressive talent and skill as songwriters, with the accomplished ability of creating infectious melodies, lush harmonies and relatable lyrics; URBANO’s highly unique brand of original music is sure to captivate music lovers of all genres.

Check out their EXPLOSIVE first Single entitled “Are You?”:

URBANO is quickly proving that they have the musical sensibility and talent to enjoy success for a long time.

Reviewing the Gangsta Rabbi’s 31st album!

We recently had the opportunity to enter the wildly unpredictable, chaotic, and beautifully insane mind of the King of Jewish Punk, Steve “Gangsta Rabbi” Lieberman. We were introduced to the Gangsta Rabbi through his 31st album and 69th release entitled “2nd KING of JEWISH PUNK #31/69 (2017/3468)”.

As we discussed in our previous feature in What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 22, Steve Lieberman is undeniably a highly versatile, insanely unpredictable, and wildly creative individual.

As he has done on all of his previous releases, Steve sings and plays all of the instruments.

The music contained within this album features a large a delicious cacophony of varied instrumentation including the use of; guitar, bass, trombones, flutes, mangal vadya, melodica, beat-machines, and double bass drums.

Also noted in our previous feature, but integral to understanding the personality captured within his music; Steve is considered what many in the music world refer to as an “outsider musician”.

An outsider musician refers to individuals whom compose music that blatantly ignores commercial industry standard musical or lyrical practices. This is often because they have no formal training (or refuse to), or because they passionately disagree with conventional rules of music in general.

With this release, Lieberman does justice to the title “King of Jewish Punk”.

This release is meant to be biting and uninviting, as its increased harshness serves as a symbol for Steve’s on-going struggle with terminal cancer.  Every song on this release, except for “25 Days in a Coma”, are rewritten and rerecorded from Lieberman’s impressively vast back catalog.

My personal favorite on the album is “1st Diaspora Egypt”. With its unpredictability and feverish soloing, this track truly encapsulates that raw excitement and energy that Steve will always be fondly remembered for.

Check out the track here:  https://soundcloud.com/gangstarabbi/1st-diaspora-egypt?in=gangstarabbi/sets/2nd-king-of-jewish-punk-31-69

This release may be incredibly difficult to get into for the new listener that is unfamiliar with Steve’s previous work.

It is important to understand that this is precisely the point.

This is not a commercial release that you are meant to jam to with ease. This is a window into the mind and incredibly interesting life of Steve Lieberman. Once you engage yourself with the music, much like a handshake, and understand that you are getting to know how Lieberman’s mind works; it all begins to feel far more approachable.

I highly recommend you take the time to listen to the album in full: https://soundcloud.com/gangstarabbi/sets/2nd-king-of-jewish-punk-31-69

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 22

We recently had the opportunity to go on the incredibly fascinating and wildly unexpected sonic ride into the King of Jewish Punk, Steve “Gangsta Rabbi” Lieberman’s uniquely passionate musical world.

The Gangsta Rabbi represents passion in its most beautifully raw form. Born on June 21st, 1958 in Brooklyn, New York to a working-class Jewish family, Steve Lieberman began using music as his artistic medium of expression at a very young age. Beginning with his acquisition of a bass guitar in order to fill a vacancy in his junior high-school jazz band, and spending most of his formative years jumping between numerous different hard rock and jazz bands; it was clear from early in his life that Steve would spend his life engulfed in the world of music.

Steve Lieberman is truly, without a doubt, a highly versatile and wildly creative individual. On all of his releases (soon to be releasing his 31st album), Steve sings and plays all of the instruments. This is even more remarkable when you realize that his music features a large array of unique instruments, including, but not limited to; guitar, bass, trombones, flutes, mangal vadya, melodica, beat-machines, and double bass drums.

Steve is considered what many in the music world refer to as an “outsider musician”. An outsider musician refers to individuals whom compose music that blatantly ignores commercial industry standard musical or lyrical practices. This is often because they have no formal training (or refuse to), or because they passionately disagree with conventional rules of music in general. In my opinion, this sentiment captures the true essence of punk music. In this case, the King of Jewish Punk is a very fitting title for Lieberman.

Steve’s musical insanity reminds me of the beautifully insane Syd Barrett. Both can be described as walking a fine line between absolute genius and insanity. Steve’s chaotic and unpredictable nature can likely be attributed to his lifelong struggle with bi-polar disorder. In his later years, and manifesting in his most recent releases, Steve’s music has taken a much heavier and distortion-laden sound. This is meant to symbolize his on-going fight with terminal leukemia.

Steve has had a truly momentous and wild career. Notably, the Gangsta Rabbi shared the stage with Weezer, Andrew WK, Glassjaw, Ryan Dunn, and the Misfits.

While it may sound harsh and uninviting; Steve’s music is filled with raw emotion and passion, and that is something much of commercial music is missing nowadays.

Indie Interview Series

We Recently had the opportunity to get to know the multi-talented AfroPop sensation Akaycentric a little better.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

I have never written to a beat because it makes it easier and I love challenges when writing, it tasks my brain when I usually have to write without any sort of guideline beats, though it’s not a crime to write on beats.

1st, I usually have a concept, then I come up with my rhythm and progression, and then I start writing, I usually know what I want my song to sound like even before I hit the studio, its key for me.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer: I love performing with a live band because I relate with my audience and fans better, the studio is fun but can be energy draining especially when you sing with so much passion and energy like I do while recording. I guess that is why most artistes don’t record themselves while recording.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer: I will pick one of my song titled “loving you” and this is because it is a very sincere song, not like others are not but this song has a sincere story it tells, and its emotional as well. Loving you talks about a young man who works so hard to make a living for his family.  While his lover complains that he is never around to give her the attention she deserves. He explains that he loves her and he must work hard to make her happy, asking a question “If I’m poor, with nothing to offer, would you still stay with me?” This is a factual situation that Is common around us.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer: It takes passion 1st of all, it takes creativity, it takes knowledge as well.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Answer: Yes there are upcoming materials, some I’ve completed already and some in the kitchen…’cooking’, also we have started our media tour here in Nigeria and hopefully we move to other countries soonest. Some features too. So many big things.

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Answer: Obviously, the songs are on all major media platforms and digital stores as well. Fans can also get the songs on my website www.akaycentric.com. On all social media find me at @akaycentric. Or just search the name Akaycentric

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 20

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the soulful, San Francisco based singer-songwriter Katie Garibaldi.

Katie Garibaldi is taking the San Francisco music scene by storm with her brilliant fusion of classic country, folk, and pop-sensibility. Garibaldis first full-length album entitled “Follow Your Heart” brought much deserved acclaim to this artist for her intimate and unique countrified stylings.

Known for her commanding ability to make her guitar sing, as well as her unmatched vocal prowess; Katie Garibaldi is an artist on-the-rise with limitless potential.

Recently releasing her new five-song EP entitled, “Rooted Clarity”, Katie Garibaldi impressively flexes her versatility and ever-evolving maturity as an artist. Straying away from the more traditional country style of her previous album; Katie has rediscovered and embraced her folk inspired roots.

With “Rooted Clarity”, Katie Garibalidi has brilliantly crafted an emotive and soulfully immersive sonic experience for listeners. This incredibly effective release is sure to capture both the ears and hearts of listeners of all genres. As highly respected the Daily Country boasts regarding this release, ““Garibaldi’s light as a feather vocals exude a strength that makes you want to believe in yourself and pursue your dreams and most importantly, gives you the courage, and clarity, to be yourself, trust yourself and allow yourself to fly.”

Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Katie Garibaldi’s music is the fact that it is so incredibly diverse that it doesn’t marginalize and attract acclaim from fandom of just one specific genre. Her gentle and beautifully ethereal vocals hypnotize and draw listeners in, while her meticulously crafted instrumentals create an undeniably inescapable sonic landscape.

It is significant to mention that the first Single released off of Rooted Clarity, entitled “Delightful” remarkably earned a coveted nomination for the 2006 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

Exclusive Album Review: Sienná – Q.o.S

We recently had the pleasure of spinning Sienná’s new ground-breaking experimental album entitled, “Q.o.S”.

Sienná – the on-the-rise composer, DJ, and experimental music sensation, in my honest opinion, will evolve as one of the artists, whom I’d put amongst some of the most groundbreaking musical masterminds.

This brilliant artist not only acts as a unique innovator; but also effectively channels her deep, emotive, and resonating vision through an impressive command of the experimental genre. Supporting her vision with her tools of artistic expression, rather that exploiting them as the gimmick they could easily become; Sienná stands out among an overpopulated market as a fearless an honest artist with a story to tell.

Sienná‘s new experimental album “Q.o.S” is not simply a collection of avant-garde pieces per se – certainly not in a strict or literal sense. Rather, it is comprised of a large fraction of remarkably accessible, percussive, and ambient pieces with an expansive, encompassing, and ethereal sound. On the contrary; the album also features ornery, engulfing sonic barrages of rhythmic sensibility and infectious vocal work.

Impressively, Somewhere within these complex and fastidiously crafted tracks there’s a magnificent injection of anthemic, yet haunting instrumental and vocal pieces and that conjure up dynamic feelings of loss, desperation, beauty, and nest expression.

The ambient textures featured within the album are lush, but not in the literal definition of the word; rather – in the very sound of the word. The sonic landscape crafted within this album showcases a fusion of sound that feels intimately roomy, well-balanced and evocative, with a great focus on gorgeously shaped backdrops that add a dark, refreshingly organic quality to her tracks.

At times, focusing on minimalism, the sounds resonate, merge and surround the listener in a sort of sonic ecstasy. They expand and meander in a flowing fashion, and sweep you in much like the dragging waves washing on the shore of a dark beach; at times these textures are effectively peppered by small intricacies, experimental percussion, and soothing vocals.

Each sound within each track seems to memorably interfere in an oddly irregular, yet efficacious fashion. This first builds an almost perturbed monotony – a growing excitement and sense of anticipation for something to emerge which never fails to deliver.

Be sure to check out this beautifully unique and groundbreaking album.

“Q.o.S” was recently released via Sienná‘s Anneis Records label, features ten tracks, and showcases the upcoming artists incredible versatility, and ambitious venture into the experimental genre.
