Indie Interview Series

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with experimental artist, and incredible sonic innovator SIENNÁ.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Check out other artist profiles:

Oh, thank you! It really depends. Sometimes melody first, sometimes the beat first, sometime just short loops first, or sometimes everything comes to my mind all at once. What I love about songwriting alone is that you can do anything you want, and that there´s no rules you must deal with. So I don´t follow any formulas.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

I had my band earlier, but I had to accept that we all went through some major changes in life circumstances. So, I had to make a drastic change as I realized that it was too hard to adapt ourselves to the changes – in that way we didn´t need to risk our friendship. I perform as a live DJ now, blending my own music, Japanese intelligent EDM and some quality beats you might know, or might not know. I love being in a studio too, but it´s hard to compare perfoming live outside with recording inside. Two completely different worlds.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Maybe a song named “Iwashimizu”. I feel I expressed myself and my vision (the memory I tried to captured into the sound) well on the song. It doesn´t follow regular sequences. It may sound unpredictable in term of chord progressions or time beats – but everything is correctly placed to my ears. If I was allowed to pick one more song, “Quintessence” due to the same reason, but it´s an upbeat version.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

No music is right or wrong. Many artists/bands have to deal with contracts or external factors that might limit their freedom of doing what they really want. Personally, I believe it´s all about daring to do what you want/what you believe is right for your music regardless of what people would say. You may have to  prepare for some harsh comments, but you can also receive positive comments that make you so truly happy that nothing else matters.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

I´ll be performing at The Cavern Club in Liverpool on 31. May 2017 – my childhood dream as a life-long eager The Beatles fan. I´m planning a few more DJ-sets while I´m in the UK around the date. And I´ll start working for a new remix album to release re-recorded, re-mixed, re-mastered versions of my existing EDM(-ish)songs, hopefully withing 2017.
