Indie Interview Series

We recently had the opportunity to sit with the stylistic retro Synth Wave duo ACP PRO. ACP PRO consists of Vlad Opreanu and Seth Weaver.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Answer:

Seth:  For us it’s a mood, especially while making this album.  Before we started a single track, we surrounded ourselves with art, watched movies, and made playlists of songs we love from that time. We immersed ourselves in the feeling of the era, so hopefully that shines through in the music. Sometimes it’s the beat, sometimes it’s the melody, but mood always comes first.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer:

Vlad:  We have performed live as DJs and in bands in the past, but this is a brand new project for us as producers.  A proper ACP PRO live show will be coming later in the year. We’re currently piecing together the right materials to pull off our vision for presenting the music to audiences in a live setting.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer:

Vlad: That’s a tough one since we balanced this project to cover first impressions for different people. I would say tracks like Wolf Killer, Q*Brick and Xmm have all had strong responses from listeners.  If I had to narrow it down to one it would be Electric Night because of the vision it delivers and the amazing vocals from Joy Steelman.  We had a great time producing that track.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer:

Seth:  Obviously, the answer is different for different people.  We’d say the best way to innovate is to trust your instinct and avoid doubting yourself when you are doing something that goes against the grain.  Even if that makes for a tougher road to finding your audience, at the end of the day you have to love what you are making, it’s for you as an artist first and foremost.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Answer:

Vlad:  We just released our first album Able Archer 83 available everywhere!  ACP PRO will also be releasing music videos and some singles as we prepare for our next project, so be on the lookout.

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Anwer:

Seth:  Our music can be found on any of the popular formats, and many smaller ones. Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, SoundCloud, and Beatport to name a few.  Definitely add us on Facebook and Instagram, we are always adding cool supplemental art and other media about the worlds of film, 80s, horror, and synth wave music- everything that inspires us.

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 33

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the insanely creative, retro-inspired Synth Wave duo ACP PRO.

Based out of Florida, ACP PRO was founded in 2014 by Vlad Opreanu and Seth Weaver. The duo has recently embarked on the release of their first full-length album entitled “Able Archer 83”, released May 23rd 2017. Drawing heavy inspiration from horror movie soundtracks of the 80’s; ACP PRO has crafted a sound that brilliantly fuzes 80’s horror nostalgia with their own distinctive modern twist.

Chilling and dread-inducing synthesizer lines have long become synonymous with the horror genre, thanks to the defining score-work of the composers of the 80’s. In their wildly creative introduction to the scene, ACP PRO has seized these memorable sounds and crafted a dynamic, nostalgic, and strangely dance-inducing concept album.

To share a short snippet of the album’s undeniably alluring concept; in ACP PRO’s own words:

“Insert tape. The whirr of a VCR. Adjust your tracking. The plot moves with nostalgic familiarity. The stark grays of a slowed down Joy Division echo in the opening bass, driven by 909s that score the frames where viewers first glimpse the killer, through an industrial/freestyle stalking sequence, to sexy interludes, neon kitsch splashes where future victims sneak away to dark inviting enclaves only to be confronted with the inevitable moog-laden downward spiral in the last act. The Final Girl survives, and there’s a momentary catharsis from the anxiety of mutually-assured destruction. Except unlike the finality of the end credits rolling, the audience emerges in a dimly lit parking lot to the sounds of a passing Trans-Am blasting The Fixx’s Red Skies at Night, reminding us the true terror is outside the film.”

Judging by that short premise, us listeners know are we in for a wild sonic ride.

ACP PRO is definitely a breathe of fresh air in an industry that feels so over-saturated by copy cat artists. Their sound is innovative and unique, and their ability to conjure up 80’s nostalgia while maintaining a distinct identity is extraordinary.

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 31

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know London-based alternative pop band, Dakú Lights. With their ability to merge addictive beats with smooth vocals and catchy hooks they  have brilliantly perfected the ability to craft an utterly unique sound.

Formed in April 2016, the mixed gendered group consists of the fiery Bhavini, relaxed Haiiiro and Panda, the cuddly big brother of the trio. Each band member is represented by their own distinct colour to match their personality, with Bhavini being red, Haiiiro as pink-orange and Panda as purple.

So far, they’ve been interviewed by Eastern Eye magazine and have been endorsed by multiple YouTube stars and online celebrities, while playing small shows around the UK.

With wide reaching influences, from Adele, Maroon 5 and Michael Jackson to Mura Masa, Jai Paul and Jadu Heart, as well as KPOP’s, BTS and BigBang, they mould their original and unique sound from their varying tastes. They have the same passion for music at heart, with differing ways of expression, allowing their creativity and individuality to thrive.

Most recently, they released their first EP, Illumiiinate, on iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud and other online platforms, to a positive response. Listeners who are enjoying the group’s developing catalogue praise the organic friendship that they share and their unusual, yet inspiring sound.

https://soundcloud.com/daku-lights/sets/illumiiinate

Named in response to the band’s name Dakú, meaning Dark in Japanese, Illumiiinate is about combining dark and light sounds in an exciting combination. Lead single Overand song Say No More set a melancholic tone, while tracks Set Me Free, Run Away and Bubblegum provide the light and fun contrast that make the EP a well-rounded release. The most notable track, Over, is built on a catchy hook and daring beats. This innovative sound sets them apart from current UK chart songs, giving them the potential to reach unprecedented success.

Currently in the midst of pursuing a record deal, the band remain focussed on producing music that people enjoy and appreciate. They love to look out over a crowd and see people dancing and smiling to their songs, as it’s the most rewarding experience for an artist to feel. Working towards maintaining their love for music and performing, they are extremely hard-working and dedicated to creating fresh and exciting material. Taking leaps and bounds with every new track, they are excited to release new singles and grow their platform online in the next year.

Gearing up for an extensive tour, they are aiming to build their stage presence and take their music as far and wide as possible. Their ultimate goal is to achieve an international presence so that they can take their music and performances across the globe. Within the next year, they hope to release their debut album and start taking steps towards achieving their dreams.

Indie Interview Series: EXRCM

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the wildly creative and talented on-the-rise rockers EXRCM.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Answer: Well, first of all thanks a lot for the compliment, we truly appreciate. Our goal is always to make our track personal, engaging and immersive. We are really happy you could sense it.

Usually, we focus on the melody first. When working on the melody, we try to be completely instinctive, we want it to be the more creative and deep as possible. Then, the beat builds up the skeleton of our music and it does it with such a spontaneity and naturalness thanks to the great talent of our drummer.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer: We have always considered playing live as a great experience. We love being directly in contact with the public. And we love that feeling you have right before a concert, when you are both nervous and excited. We really enjoy performing, we feel comfortable when we are on the stage. It’s not strange or embarrassing, it’s just part of who we are. The reason is that we had the opportunity to perform live since immediately after becoming a band. We got used to it. We come indeed from a really small town, where, even if not easy, being part of the most important music scene is not too hard. You just have to work hard and really believe in what you do. But there isn’t such a big competition like, for instance, in Berlin, where thousands of bands share the same goals and desire to succeed.

So, as I said before, we feel completely comfortable on stage, but the moment when we truly free ourself and we unleash our creativity is when we are “within our safe walls”. They don’t even have to be the walls of a recording studio. It’s enough to have a small room, with computers and a audio card, and a lot of free time. This is the moment we truly develop our ideas and experiment new things with our music. This is the moment we truly express ourselves.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer: Honestly, we would say “the song that follows the last one”. We believe that the most beautiful song is always the one that we have not finished yet. We love to consider our music path as continually growing and developing.

But if we really have to choose a song we have already released, then we are really torn.
For sure it would be part of our last EP called Loite, which represents also the first EP where we express ourself in english. It is indeed the result of a great maturation, both personal and musical. But choosing one song is hard, they are all really different, they all have something to tell. Maybe the song that moves the most since the first listening is “Dizzy” because of its intensity and depth. But still, we can’t give you a concrete answer.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer: this is a hard question. From our point of view, being “innovative” means “not being biased”. There are so many different music paths, and we we truly believe it’s necessary to try all of them without having an opinion since the beginning.  There is always something new to learn.  And only thanks to these different experiences, it is possible to push the limits always farther. And this fascinates us: going beyond the limits is something we always try to do with our music. But this doesn’t mean trying to impress the listeners with complicated melodies and beats lacking of a true and deep meaning. This is not being innovative. To be really innovative, you have to reach places nobody had ever reached and find something beautiful where nobody else can.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Answer:
we just released Loite, our last EP, which was started in our italian home town and completed in our new german house. At the moment, our main goal is to perform live in the next months, we are now looking for concerts in different cities. We can’t wait to perform again with our new music!

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Answer: Absolutely, we have a website, where you can find all the information about us and you can download our music. “Loite” is also available on Spotify, but honestly we recommend to listen to it on YouTube. Loite is part of a project of three video documentaries, where each video tells the story and life of different people of Berlin. We shot these videos when we moved to Germany and they represent in the most truthful way the lives of the people they talk about. If you are interested in this project, YouTube is definitely the best way to check it out.

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol.30

We recently had the opportunity to get to know the refreshingly unusual and incredibly unique Pop newcomer Adam Prince King.

This on-the-rise producer/singer/songwriter was born in London, but proudly embraces his family roots as a Cypriot. Beginning when Adam was just a child; he had gained notoriety and a offbeat reputation for his highly eccentric appetite.

His wild fashion and his unapologetic idiosyncrasies undeniably created a swirl of mystique around him, and Adam has brilliantly crafted a remarkable and alluring artistic image from his curious roots.

As a testament to his character and unique wit, Adam would often head to primary school in a midnight blue velvet waistcoat and red bow tie. To justify his usual style to his teachers, Adam would often facetiously claim that he had a wedding to attend after class.

Now embracing a new artistic medium to exercise his unique creativity, Adam Prince King has embraced  music as the perfect outlet to entertain the masses with his alluring, and strangely charming, flamboyance and charisma.

Perhaps the most respectable quality of Adam’s is his devotion to self-expression, and absolute control over his output and image. This guarantees that we, as listeners, are going to be introduced to his personally designed wacky and wild world (untouched by the corporate machine poisoning the creative air within the current Pop industry).

Adam Prince King has recently exploded into the scene with  his fun and awe-inspiring new Single entitled “Flamingos”.

Watch the official video here:

The wonderfully flamboyant and playful video was directed by the highly respected Russian-born photographer/director Vasilisa Forbes. The video has already gathered much acclaim by major outlets and listeners alike. Promonews describes the video as, “…a video shot in 4:3 colours its pillarboxes pastel-pink, you know you’re in for a bright, fun visual. Cutting between an array of dancers and shots of King in various excellent costumes, the simple performance setups manage to keep the video feeling alive, whilst inviting you to gaze in awe at King’s DIY stylish world”. The highly revered BBC Introducing perfectly sums up the video as, “Absolutely beautiful and unique”.

Indie Interview Series

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the insanely versatile and wildly in demand songwriter/producer OHINI JONEZ.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Answer: It really depends. When I’m going for something dark and ominous I end up creating my melody first; when it comes to music for cars and the club I create the beat first. The purpose I feel for the music dictates the proces.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer: When I was primarily a performing artist I loved being on stage. After I complete what I want to accomplish as a producer I’d love to return to the stage. I’m at home in both, the energies are different. Being on stage is sharing, and the studio is deeply personal.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer: Probably the Kal-El (Yellow Sun Trap) instrumental. It’s pounding and simple. It hits people in the chest while also giving them something to vibe to; that’s a combination!

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer: An open ear, mind, and heart. You have to be willing to accept the new sounds and vibes that come, otherwise you’ll be left somewhere stuck in time.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Answer:
We’re currently raising funds and preparing for a very large scale multi media project. Speaking on it would be the equivalent of Marvel talking about the MCU in 2004 too loosely. I’ll say that it will encompass all genres, all forms of media, and be Internet based.

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Answer: Yes! TrakTrain.com/OhiniJonez is where my instrumentals are available, and I can also be contacted directly for exclusives! Listeners always search Ohini Jonez on Apple Music, or your preferred streaming site. Also don’t hesitate to visit my Bandcamp (OhiniJonez.Bandcamp.com).

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 28

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the wildly innovative and multi-talented singer/songwriter, artist, and producer, MANCHESTER RAIN.

We were first introduced to MANCHESTER RAIN through his explosive debut Single eponymously entitled, “Manchester Rain”.

Showcasing warped, frantic, and moody black and white visuals; MANCHESTER RAIN has brilliantly crafted an emotive and highly unique masterpiece. It is impressive to note that everything, down to the video itself, was written, produced, performed, and edited by MANCHESTER RAIN himself.

Check out the new Single here:

This extremely versatile artist is based out of the UK, and has taken on the undeniable challenge of being a fully independent artist. We find that one of the most glaring setbacks for new-coming independent artists is the lack of professional mixing and mastering that is necessary to break through into the mainstream markets. This certainly isn’t the case with MANCHESTER RAIN.

It is rare that we are introduced to an independent artist that absolutely blows our minds; more so, upon their first release.

The audio production exhibited in the freshly released Single is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained; we imagine this must have been very challenging to mix.

The mix itself is absolutely stunning, with each complex sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. The genre is brilliantly undefinable, with MANCHESTER RAIN sculpting his own self-defining soundscape.

This is truly an accomplishment for this artist. When approaching newly released music, it’s hard to do so without inherent criticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are exposed to the same formulaic, cookie-cutter, copy of a copy of a copy brand of artists. Though these types of artists have brilliantly perfected the ability to produce safe, catchy, and infectious music; they ultimately amount to being entirely forgettable, soon to be replaced by the next musical doppelgänger.

MANCHESTER RAIN has fiercely rebelled against this current trend; creating something innovative and unique, yet entirely approachable and digestible.
This artist will almost certainly be taking the scene by storm. Please be sure to like/share/follow MANCHESTER RAIN on:

What We’re Spinning (Indie Shout Out!) Vol. 27

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the infectiously charismatic live performer and highly revered recording artist Pato (Motown) Margetic.

Pato (Motown) Margetic is a highly sought after and wildly versatile recording artist/performer based in Detroit, Michigan.

He has been gaining notoriety and much acclaim in the city of Detroit, as well as building undeniable visibility around the rest of the nation, with his highly original music and larger-than-life stage presence.

Pato has impressively been featured on several highly respected and influential networks such as MTV numerous times worldwide. Recently was named by Cosmopolitan Magazine as Michigan’s Bachelor of the year!

Pato is quickly becoming an unstoppable force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Judging by the release of his newest Single “Ride Out”, Pato has the “it factor” necessary to compete with the industry’s dominating talents. With a brilliant fusion of classic Motown, R&B, and unquestionable Pop sensibility; “Ride Out” will definitely be opening up more lucrative doors for the soul singer.

Showcased within “Ride Out” are hypnotic falsetto vocals, smooth guitar and bass playing, and dance-inducing drums and percussion. All of these impressive sections are meticulously crafted and seamlessly mixed to create  a refreshingly unique and unforgettable sound.
