Artist Spotlight: Ric-Wil

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the multi-talented Rapper, Songwriter and Producer, Ric-Wil.

Upon discovering this artist, we were immediately struck by what may be his strongest asset: his courage to be entirely unapologetic in his assertion of his own unique identity.

The Hip Hop/Rap genre as a whole is one that (especially in recent years with increased accessibility to self-record) can often feel uninspired and frustratingly tired due to the lack of variation, ambition, and innovation applied within the songwriting and production stage. It seems that every week we are introduced to the same regurgitated beat with the same lazy mumble-rap verses and auto-tune saturated hooks—- only to fizzle out into forgetfulness.

Ric-Wil is definitely an exception and stands out within a crowded market. One of the first characteristics that we noticed in Ric’s tracks that immediately set him apart was his willingness to be provocative and honest. Too often, rappers feel the need to push a familiar facade (which at this point, has become a parody of itself), or they mistake humbleness for weakness. Ric does neither, he has embraced his own personal identity and has made no apologies for it. Ric was raised in Jamestown, New York and has since settled in Gary, Indiana. It isimportant to note that Ric is no stranger to the industry. He grew up in a family of outstanding musical performers and they would constantly include him in their rehearsals. At just 10 years old, Ric had his musical awakening and set his sights on being a famous musician and rapper. He imitated the famous and influential rappers of the day until he grew comfortable with his own talents and found his performing persona. He cites his influences as; Jay Z, 50 Cent, the Notorious BIG, and Kanye West. Having been raised in Jamestown, New York, it might not surprise anyone to see the East Coast thread running through his list of favorites.

Ric-Wil has recently released his latest official single, “The Bad Guy.” The track has been dropped in both explicit and radio-ready formats. It is proudly published on the R U Wit It Entertainment independent record label.

Ric-Wil is definitely one of those increasingly rare transcendent artists that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the hip-hop or rap genres; the sheer uniqueness and impact of Ric’s newest Single will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners.

Its pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody so incredibly versatile and talented behind the mic. Shying away from the typical clichés of the genres that he borrows inspiration from, Ric has a remarkably unique style and sound which he maintains throughout these tracks. While Ric-Wil certainly pays homage to the greats; he frequently veers away the genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, making the listening experience feel entirely new and unpredictable.

This artist will almost certainly be continuing his rise!
