EP Review: Jordan Everist’s “Call it a Night”

Portland-based producer Jordan Everist’s newest EP “Call it a Night” lands a devastating blow to the terrible trend of copy-cat artists, and in the aftermath, sets an incredible new standard for all new coming indie-acts.

It is an extremely rare occurrence that we are introduced to an independent artist that absolutely blows our minds; Jordan Everist has done just this. We previously had the pleasure of getting to know this incredibly ambitious artist, and we were beyond impressed (check out our other feature here).  To catch you up, how many albums can honestly be described as a seamless and cohesive blend of nearly every major genre? With music being so subjective, and encompassed in endless revolving discussion; most people can’t even agree on what genre a band or artist’s work perfectly falls within. Moreover, it is constant hot topic of debate about which artists have been able to seize a genre, tip it upside down, deform it and completely redefine it. This is precisely what Jordan does, and he does it with curious and sophisticated precision. Jordan has embraced his own personal identity and has made no apologies for it.

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

His approach to songwriting naturally injects his music with mystique and allure. His embrace of his own style allows his music to outshine the rest within the genre. These are qualities that are severely lacking within the current industry. With the newly released 4-song EP “Call it a Night”; Jordan once again shows us his alluring versatility as an artist. This is even more remarkable given the fact that he has taken on the undeniable challenge of being a fully independent artist. We find that one of the most glaring setbacks for new-coming independent artists is the lack of professional mixing and mastering that is necessary to break through into the mainstream markets. This certainly isn’t the case with Jordan Everist. The production-work featured on each one of his tracks showcases an entirely unique style and technique.

One of Jordan Everist’s most distinguishing qualities is his ability to adapt to any genre and infuse it with his distinct style. Each thoughtful layer and clever sequence carries a hidden punch and remarkable depth that is not often found in indie releases. Jordan seems to have perfected his formula with this EP; add some infectious beats, brilliant song sequencing, and incredible structuring, and you have an irresistible fusion of catchy music oozing with uniqueness.

Jordan Everist is a remarkable artist and is definitely a breath of fresh air within a tired industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. “Call it a Night” is a MUST LISTEN!

Single Spotlight: Skaa’s “Better Days”

With independent recording continually growing more affordable and accessible than it ever has been; the industry is quickly becoming over-saturated with hobbyists and crowded with wannabes. Due to this, it is becoming ever-harder to be noticed within the endless sea of independent noise. The number of new hip-hop artists entering the industry every day is growing exponentially. With this increase in industry competition, you’d think there would be a “standard” for things you shouldn’t do if you’re trying to become noticed and successful. Unfortunately, this is not the case…in fact, it seems that a vast majority of new artists have taken the lazy route — copy those whom are more successful than you.

Skaa has fiercely rebelled against this current trend; creating something innovative and unique, yet entirely approachable and digestible.

We previously had the pleasure of getting to know this incredibly ambitious artist, and we were beyond impressed (check out our other feature here).

Check out Skaa’s newest Single “Better Days”:

Skaa is definitely one of those increasingly rare transcendent artists that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the hip-hop or rap genres; the sheer uniqueness and thoughtfulness of Skaa’s newest Single “Better Days” will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners.

It’s pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody so incredibly versatile and talented behind the mic (and so brilliantly selective with the production). Shying away from the typical clichés of the genres that he borrows inspiration from, Skaa has a remarkably unique style and sound which he maintains throughout these early tracks. While Skaa certainly pays homage to the greats; he frequently veers away the genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, making the listening experience feel entirely new and unpredictable.

BUCK50ENT has fiercely rebelled against this current trend; presenting something innovative and unique, yet entirely approachable and digestible.

It is completely natural to become inspired by your industry forerunners, but you must stray away from riding on their coattails by replicating their distinct sound and style. This is precisely what C Dolla$, Get Right Sour, and OG Kaylyles naturally do so well. Upon discovering Buck50ENT, we were immediately struck by what may be their strongest asset: their courage to be entirely unapologetic in their assertion of their own unique identity. This shines radiantly in their newest Single entitled “Rollin”.

Artist Spotlight: Dhat Wi$eman

It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music crafted by today’s generation. It seems as if fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy copy of a copy Singles.

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

When approaching nearly all newly independent-released music, it’s hard to do so without inherent cynicism and skepticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are continuously exposed to these same formulaic, cookie-cutter, brand of artists. Although these types of artists have brilliantly perfected the ability to produce safe, catchy, and infectious music; they ultimately amount to being entirely forgettable, soon to be replaced by the next musical doppelgänger. This trend has infected almost every musical appendage and genre, whether it be commercially produced or independently released. The most unfortunate result of this trend is the stifling of musical ambition and the lack of innovation to set oneself apart in the industry.

While this approach may work well if your goal as an artist is to make fast cash, albeit becoming forgettable, it certainly isn’t the winning formula for industry longevity and lasting notoriety.

In a refreshing twist, the vicious and wildly ambitious Hip Hop artist/ rapper Dhat Wi$eman is fiercely rebelling against this trend and quickly emerging as an indie rap sensation.

Listen for yourself with Wiseman’s absolute FIRE “Money Bitch” :

Dhat Wi$eman is quickly proving that with his addictive and unique style; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity” and one-dimensional Hip Hop/Rap, becoming something much more cutting and immersive.

With independent recording continually growing more affordable and accessible than it ever has been; the industry is quickly becoming over-saturated with hobbyists and fame-seekers. Due to this, it is becoming ever-harder to be noticed within the endless sea of independent noise. The number of new artists entering the industry every day is growing exponentially. With this increase in industry competition, you’d think there would be a “standard” for things you shouldn’t do if you’re trying to become noticed and successful. Unfortunately, this is not the case…in fact, it seems that a vast majority of new artists have taken the lazy route —- copy those whom are more successful than you. You would think that this competitive environment would inspire some artists to go against the grain and carve out their own identity, but this is too often not the case.

This is precisely what makes this artist such a remarkable and respectable artist.

Check out “Life is too Hard” :

Dhat Wi$eman has developed a sound that feels entirely fresh and new. This brilliant artist not only acts as a unique innovator; but also effectively channels his vision through an impressive command of the Hip Hop/ Rap genre. Avoiding the gimmick he could easily become; Dhat Wi$eman stands out among an overpopulated market as a fearless and provocative artist with a story to tell.

The audio production exhibited in his catalog is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained; we imagine this must have been very challenging to mix. Each layer within the Single is uniquely stunning, with each complex sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. The genre is a brilliant fusion of Wi$eman’s influences, with this artist sculpting his own self-defining soundscape.

Dhat Wi$eman is a remarkable artist and is definitely a  breath of fresh air within a tired industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. Dhat Wi$eman is a MUST LISTEN!

Artist Spotlight: Malea

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the incredibly ambitious and undeniably gifted Electro-Pop sensation, Malea.

This on-the-rise Electro-Pop sensation has been making waves in the music industry ever since her explosive debut with the well-received Single “Give” in 2014. After the incredible success of her debut, Malea impressively released another chart-topping Single entitled “One Hot Mess” (written by Malea and Francci Richard, produced by Kizzo, and remixed by recent Grammy winner Dave Aude). Malea’s star further ascended with One Hot Mess placing her at number one on the Billboard electronic dance chart (remaining on the Billboard charts for ten straight weeks.)

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

This artist has had quite a remarkable rise to prominence. Malea graduated from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, majoring in classical vocal performance. During her time at the Manhattan School of Music, she was cast in the Broadway premiere of the revival of The King and I. Impressively, she performed in the ensemble and the leading role of Tuptim in the Tony Award Winning Broadway musical. This early success led to more lucrative acting roles, including commercials and TV.

Listen to her newest hit Single “Spaceships Fly”:

While the music showcased within Malea.’s growing catalog can be broadly described as “Pop”, there is so much more to it than what you might expect. This brilliant artist not only acts as unique innovator with her songwriting talents; but she also effectively channels her deep, emotive, and resonating vision through an impressive command of the Electro-Pop genre. Each track featured within her catalog is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains minor mixing and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and add undeniable character to the track. Malea. consistently surprises and impresses with her outstanding vocal ability and displays a strong command of pop vocal melodies. Each vocal performance is authentic and invokes a strong emotional response with her thoughtful and emotive lyrics.

Listen to “You’ll Never Fix My Heart”:

These tracks differ from most recent indie/Pop releases in that they are fearlessly ambitious and unapologetically unique and difficult to label perfectly. Each track in Malea’s catalog oozes with integrity, honesty, and emotional awareness. Not only are they polished and meticulously crafted, but they’re sequenced to perfection— leaving the listener wanting more. We can definitely see this artist continuing to climb the ranks and becoming a household name. Not only does she have the ability to craft infectious pop hooks and melodies, but she does so with a remarkably unique blending of genres and evident care for messaging and content.

Artist Spotlight: MAINTAINE

Recently, it seems like every new rapper or Hip Hop artist we meet describes themselves similarly. It usually goes something like, “I want to be the next Kanye/Drake/Lamar…” This sentiment is then often uncomfortably showcased in their music as a shameless imitation of their heroes. While it is completely natural to become inspired by your industry forerunners, but you must stray away from riding on their coattails by replicating their distinct sound and style.

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

This is precisely what Maintaine naturally does so well. Upon discovering this artist, we were immediately struck by what may be his strongest asset: his courage to be entirely unapologetic in his assertion of his own unique identity.

Check out “Famous”:

The Hip Hop/Rap genre as a whole is one that (especially in recent years with increased accessibility to self-record) can often feel uninspired and frustratingly tired due to the lack of variation, ambition, and innovation applied within the songwriting and production stage. It seems that every week we are introduced to the same regurgitated beat with the same lazy mumble-rap verses and auto-tune saturated hooks—- only to fizzle out into forgetfulness. In fact it’s hard to approach any new music without inherent cynicism and skepticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are exposed to the same formulaic, cookie-cutter, copy of a copy of a copy brand of artists. Specifically, this pattern has nearly crippled the Rap/ Hip Hop scene.

Not only has Maintaine recognized the same tired trend in the music industry, but he has made it a point to aggressively rebel against it. One of the first characteristics that we noticed in Maintaine’s tracks that immediately set him apart was his willingness to be vulnerable and honest. Too often, rappers feel the need to push a familiar facade (which at this point, has become a parody of itself), or they mistake humbleness for weakness. Maintaine does neither, he has embraced his own personal identity and has made no apologies for it. Maintaine brilliantly combines his clever lyricism with his passion for making music, resulting in his own unique form and flow.

Check out “No Love In The Dfdub”

Each track oozes venom, musical ambition, and fearless creativity. Not only are they polished and meticulously crafted, but it is sequenced to perfection, leaving the listener wanting more. This artist is definitely a trend-setter and sets an unbelievably high standard for indie Hip Hop/Rap artists hoping to break through in the scene.

Maintaine is definitely one of those increasingly rare transcendent artists that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the hip-hop or rap genres; the sheer uniqueness and thoughtfulness of Maintaine’s tracks will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners.

Check out “Hip Hop Villain”

Its pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody so incredibly versatile and talented behind the mic (and so brilliantly selective with the production). Shying away from the typical clichés of both of the genres that he borrows inspiration from, Maintaine has a remarkably unique style and sound which he maintains throughout his tracks. While Maintaine certainly pays homage to the greats; he frequently veers away the genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, making the listening experience feel entirely new and unpredictable.

Each thoughtful lyrical phrasing and clever word jumbling carries a hidden punch and remarkable depth that is not often found in newer Rap releases. While other notorious rappers are tasked with focusing the listener by removing all musical distraction with pure spoken word records to show off their genius; T.H.E Honoroll is able to effortlessly blend sophistication and flow with masterfully crafted sonic soundscapes. Add some infectious beats and brilliant song sequencing and structuring to the mix, and you have an irresistible fusion of catchy music oozing with substance.

Single Spotlight: Michael Hanson’s “Hallelujah”

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the highly accomplish and talented Michael Hanson through his brilliant new cover of the famed “Hallelujah”.

Upon listening to this incredible rendition of “Hallelujah”, it became undeniably evident that this artist is truly something special. It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music. Recently, it seems as though fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy tunes. Powerful messaging and honest content in music has been sadly lost due to this trend; it is growing more and more apparent that the main driving force behind many new “artists” entering the industry is simply a thirst for fame and money.

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

Michael Hanson has effectively carved out a unique identity, while creating something infectious and sentimental.

To give a brief overview of Michael’s impressive resume; he was the original drummer, founder and a pivotal member of iconic Canadian Music Superstars GLASS TIGER. He went on to score Five JUNO AWARDS, a GRAMMY NOMINATION and gold & multi-platinum sales worldwide, he is now widely regarded as one of Canada’s brightest songwriter/producers. It is also impressive to note that Michael has written & recorded with major industry players such as; John Bettis (Madonna, Pointer Sisters), Brad Buxer (Michael Jackson), Susan Pomerantz (Cher, Chicago). He has also shared massive stages alongside Tina Turner, The Moody Blues and Journey – later becoming a staff songwriter (obtaining GOLD status) for Warner/Chappell Canada. Michael Hanson now works as a successful independent Producer with his own studio in Mississauga, ON.

Watch the official video here:

Michael Hanson’s cover of “Hallelujah” showcases a sound that is refreshing and passionate, while the content of the music remains familiar and hard hitting. Versatile vocals shine through alluring acoustic guitar-work, smooth lead electric guitar effectively punctuate certain bars, and a smooth string section perfectly ties everything together. This makes for an incredibly diverse and lively musical experience. This artist not only acts as a unique innovator; but he also effectively channels his deep, emotive, and resonating vision through an impressive command and control of his outstanding vocal abilities.

We suggest you watch this artist closely in the coming months, we can’t wait to hear what he does next!

Indie Interview Series: Robert Allen of DownTown Mystic

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with vintage-rock sensation Robert Allen (of DownTown Mystic).

DownTown Mystic is the musical alter-ego of celebrated American Rocker, Robert Allen. Robert has a deep passion for an “old school” approach to recording (which he jokingly admits borders on obsession). DownTown Mystic has been steadily gaining exposure and mass acclaim for their incredibly distinct brand of music and vintage-inspired productions. We recently reviewed DownTown Mystic’s stellar new EP entitled “On E Street” (featuring “Mighty” Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the famed E Street Band).

Check out other artist profiles: https://indiemusicindex.com

Check out “Way to Know”:

We were so impressed by the creativity and skill showcased on the new EP, that we wanted had to learn more about this incredible artist. Robert Allen was kind enough to take the time to Robert Allen some of our questions.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Robert Allen: I’m a music guy first, so I usually get a chord progression that I put a melody to and then get the lyrics down. I don’t concentrate on the beat until I’m ready to record. That’s when I’m really groove conscious with the bass and drums.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Robert Allen: I stopped performing live to focus on the studio. There’s a different way of playing in the studio than performing live. You have to be more disciplined in the studio to get rid of some of the bad habits you can pick up from playing live.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Robert Allen: I usually say “Way To Know” because it’s a straight ahead rocker that builds and doesn’t quit. It seems like a simple song but the more you listen the more you hear.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Robert Allen: Good question. I think that’s something every artist ponders. I’m not sure there’s a definitive Robert Allen. For me personally I think you just have to be true to yourself and do what you want to do. I think innovation has to be organic, meaning that you can’t plan it. It happens when it happens because an artist is just doing what they do naturally.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Robert Allen: We just put out the On E Street EP featuring Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band in the UK and Europe. The EP has songs that are part of the Rock’n’Roll Romantic album we released in the US last year.

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?
