Indie Interview Series: Robert Allen of DownTown Mystic

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with vintage-rock sensation Robert Allen (of DownTown Mystic).

DownTown Mystic is the musical alter-ego of celebrated American Rocker, Robert Allen. Robert has a deep passion for an “old school” approach to recording (which he jokingly admits borders on obsession). DownTown Mystic has been steadily gaining exposure and mass acclaim for their incredibly distinct brand of music and vintage-inspired productions. We recently reviewed DownTown Mystic’s stellar new EP entitled “On E Street” (featuring “Mighty” Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the famed E Street Band).

Check out “Way to Know”:

We were so impressed by the creativity and skill showcased on the new EP, that we wanted had to learn more about this incredible artist. Robert Allen was kind enough to take the time to Robert Allen some of our questions.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Robert Allen: I’m a music guy first, so I usually get a chord progression that I put a melody to and then get the lyrics down. I don’t concentrate on the beat until I’m ready to record. That’s when I’m really groove conscious with the bass and drums.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Robert Allen: I stopped performing live to focus on the studio. There’s a different way of playing in the studio than performing live. You have to be more disciplined in the studio to get rid of some of the bad habits you can pick up from playing live.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Robert Allen: I usually say “Way To Know” because it’s a straight ahead rocker that builds and doesn’t quit. It seems like a simple song but the more you listen the more you hear.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Robert Allen: Good question. I think that’s something every artist ponders. I’m not sure there’s a definitive Robert Allen. For me personally I think you just have to be true to yourself and do what you want to do. I think innovation has to be organic, meaning that you can’t plan it. It happens when it happens because an artist is just doing what they do naturally.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Robert Allen: We just put out the On E Street EP featuring Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band in the UK and Europe. The EP has songs that are part of the Rock’n’Roll Romantic album we released in the US last year.

EP Review: DownTown Mystic’s “On E Street”

It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music crafted by today’s generation. It seems as if fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula to churn out commercially appealing and catchy (yet entirely unambitious) Singles. This trend has infected almost every musical appendage and genre, whether it be commercially produced or independently released. The most unfortunate result of this trend is the stifling of musical ambition and the lack of innovation to set oneself apart in the industry.

While this approach may work well if your goal as an artist is to make fast cash, albeit becoming forgettable, it certainly isn’t the winning formula for industry longevity and lasting notoriety.

DownTown Mystic effectively rebels against this trend with their newest EP “On E Street”.

DownTown Mystic is the musical alter-ego of celebrated American Rocker, Robert Allen. Robert has a deep passion for an “old school” approach to recording (which he jokingly admits borders on obsession). As Robert explains, “I grew up listening to all these great records and their sound and style has stayed with me”.  In DownTown Mystic’s newest 4-track EP, “On E Street”, Robert’s approach is refreshingly vintage-inspired and passionate, while his music remains curiously relatable and hard hitting. Emotive vocals shine through searing guitar riffs, smooth bass-lines, and a wildly groovy rhythm section featuring “Mighty” Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the famed E Street Band; making for a diverse and lively musical experience. DownTown Mystic’s overall sound is an amazingly varied fusion of Alternative Indie, Garage Rock, Blues, and good old-fashioned Rock & Roll.  Robert Allen brilliantly combines his wide-spanning influences, while maintaining effective and impactful songwriting. “Way to Know” acts the perfect opener, effectively containing a satisfying blend of all the EP has to offer.

Check out “Way to Know”:

Listeners are taken on a sonic journey through a broad spectrum of vintage Rock & Roll that pays homage to such revered artists as Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Eagles, The Beatles and Rolling Stones; all while adding an entirely unique self-defining twist. Vintage-inspired track “And You Know Why” is a great example of the variation in style you can expect within the EP.

DownTown Mystic has proven that with their addictive, passionate, and highly engaging tunes; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity”, and become something much more intimate and memorable. Each track featured on the EP is fantastically arranged in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains undeniable style and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and add undeniable character to the track. DownTown Mystic consistently surprises and impresses with his guitar-work  and displays a strong understanding of what makes the Rock genre so distinct. With the powerful and effective backing of guitars, bass, and driving percussion; the band proves that their instrumental ability is simply just one example of their many strong assets. Each vocal performance is authentic and memorable for the thoughtful lyrics.

“Hard Enough” particularly stands out upon first listen. The sonic landscape crafted within this track alone fully encapsulates the dynamic nature of the EP as a whole. The track showcases a fusion of sound that feels intimately roomy, well-balanced and evocative, with a great focus on electrified guitar-work, outstanding rhythm sections, and upbeat percussion. The sounds resonate, merge and surround the listener in a sort of sonic ecstasy, allowing you to get completely lost in the incredible music.

Check out “Hard Enough”:

Another immediate favorite, “Sometimes Wrong”, utilizes a similar approach. Impressively, The audio production overall is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained; Roberts obsession with “old school” techniques have certainly paid off. The infectious vocals are intertwined perfectly with each evolving and ever-changing layer.  It is a tireless listening experience and easily maintains your interest throughout.

“On E Street” is definitely one of those increasingly rare transcendent releases that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the Rock genres; the sheer uniqueness and thoughtfulness of the songwriting within this EP will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners. Shying away from the typical clichés of the plethora of genres that Robert borrows inspiration from, DownTown Mystic has a remarkably unique style and sound which they maintain throughout the EP. He certainly veers away from Rock genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, creating a listening experience that feels entirely new and unpredictable. “On E Street” oozes with integrity, musical ambition, and fearless creativity. This release is definitely a trend-setter and sets an unbelievably high standard for indie artists hoping to break through in the scene.

Album Review: Andrew Farstar’s “Metamorphosis”

We recently had the pleasure of listening to on-the-rise singer/songwriter Andrew Farstar. We were first introduced to Andrew through his electronic and Pop-infused album “Metamorphosis”.

Andrew Farstar’s music can best be described as a brilliantly crafted blend of Pop, EDM, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Classical Crossover. As showcased in his newest album “Metamorphosis”, Andrew has an almost uncanny ability to seamlessly combine all of his influences into something that feels entirely fresh and unique.

Musically, Andrew Farstar has effectively unleashed his wide-spanning musical tastes and influences into a giant boiling caldron, seasoned it with his own distinct style and flair and stirred ferociously until something entirely new has emerged — an infectious blend of incredible, emotive sound. Working with a wide range of producers between the US and Europe, the overall sound on “Metamorphasis” can best be described as sounding like a mixture of Justin Bieber, Charlie Puth, and Maroon 5.

The audio production exhibited in the freshly released album is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is incredibly dynamic and unrestrained; we imagine this must have been very challenging to mix. Each sound within the album is uniquely stunning, with each sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. Andrew’s musical prowess shines brilliantly on each track, with this artist quickly proving that he is a wildly talented singer-songwriter.

Listen to “My Infatuation (Love Vibration)” here:

In Andrew’s impressive sophomore album, his remarkable versatility is on full display. The impressive accompanying instrumentation, creative sequencing, masterful songwriting are undeniably alluring and captivating. His soothing vocal prowess draws you into an authentic and emotional sonic journey. This is a perfect example of what sets his music apart; it has an incredibly organic and soulful aspect to it that feels as if the music is living and breathing and evolving with every second. “Love is” perfectly captures this sentiment.

Listen to “Love Is” here:

The album progresses by effectively falling back and forth between melodic and calm sections, and spirited dynamic sections. The Album is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains minor mixing and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and infuse wonderful personality into each song. A strong example of this dynamic can be found on the anthemic “Being Human”.

Listen to “Being Human” here:

Andrew really showcases his vocal prowess and displays a strong command of infectious vocal melodies. With the strong and effective backing of synth, keys, and engaging percussion; Andrew proves that his voice is just one of his many strong assets. His vocal performance is authentic and invokes a strong emotional response with the delivery of each relatable line. His songwriting style is remarkable and clever, and each track contains an irresistibly catchy anthem that will be sure to get stuck in your head and have you singing along. Go ahead, try to get “This is How I Feel” out of your head, we dare you!

Listen to “This is How I Feel” here:

It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music crafted by today’s generation. It seems as if fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy copy of a copy Singles.

Andrew Farstar is a refreshing exception, quickly proving that with his addictive, unique, and emotionally authentic style; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity”, becoming something much more intimate and immersive. His music feels much more like an “experience” than a product.

Listening to Andrew Farstar’s “Metamorphosis” was truly an engaging and worthwhile experience. The album differs from most newer indie releases in that it effortlessly flows with integrity, honesty, and emotional awareness. Not only is it polished and meticulously crafted, but it is sequenced to perfection, leaving the listener wanting more. I definitely see this artist climbing the ranks and becoming a household name. Not only does he have the ability to craft infectious Pop melodies, but he does so with a remarkably unique blending of genres and evident care for messaging and content. We can’t wait to see what this artist does next!

Artist Spotlight: Ravenscroft

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the insanely talented Rock foursome Ravenscroft through their explosive upcoming EP entitled “Rebel”.

Upon listening to the brilliant newly released track “The Chase”, it became undeniably evident that this band is truly something special. It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music. Recently, it seems as though fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy tunes. Powerful messaging and honest content in music has been sadly lost due to this trend; it is growing more and more apparent that the main driving force  behind many new “artists” entering the industry is simply a thirst for fame and fortune.

Ravenscroft has effectively carved out a unique identity, while creating something addictive and entirely digestible.

Ravenscroft’s upcoming six-song EP “Rebel”  showcases a sound that is refreshing and passionate, while the content of the music remains entirely relatable and hard hitting. We will be focusing our review on two pre-released Singles “The Chase” and “My Dearest One”.

Raw and gritty vocals shine through explosive guitar riffs and a wildly groovy rhythm section adds undeniable character to each track. This makes for a wildly diverse and lively musical experience. The band not only acts as unique innovators; but they also effectively channeled their deep, emotive, and resonating vision through an impressive command of the Rock genre. The band’s overall sound is an amazingly varied fusion of Alternative Rock, Blues, Grunge, Psychedelic, and late 70’s Metal. It is almost as if vocalist Ralph Buso, drummer Pat Magrath, guitarist Brett Octane, and bassist Devin Baker unleashed their wide-spanning musical tastes and influences into a giant boiling caldron, seasoned it with style and flair —  and much like a mad scientist, stirred ferociously until what has emerged is unrecognizable — an infectious monstrosity of delicious sound.

Single “The Chase” particularly stands out upon first listen. The sonic landscape crafted within this track alone fully encapsulates the expected dynamic nature of the EP as a whole. The track showcases a fusion of sound that feels intimately roomy, well-balanced and evocative, with a great focus on electrified guitar-work and engaging percussion (which adds a refreshingly organic quality to the track.) The sounds resonate, merge and surround the listener in a sort of sonic ecstasy while maintaining a strong driving beat. Ralph Buso really shows off his outstanding vocal abilities and remarkable songwriting skills, while the rest of the band shows off their incredible arranging expertise and energetic performances.

Check out “The Chase”:

Another immediate favorite, “My Dearest One”, utilizes a different approach. The song is fantastically arranged with each unique layer packing a distinct punch. Impressively, Somewhere within this ambitious and inventively crafted track there’s an amazing injection of anthemic and  powerful instrumental and vocal pieces and that flow in an alluring and seamless nature. The audio production is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained; we imagine this must have been very challenging to mix. Kudos to the production team behind this release. The infectious vocals are intertwined perfectly with each evolving and ever-changing layer.  It is a tireless listening experience and easily maintains your interest throughout. With the powerful and effective backing of acoustic guitar, impressive lead, bass, and driving percussion; Brett proves that his vocal prowess is simply just one example of the band’s many strong assets. Each vocal performance is authentic and memorable for his thoughtful lyrics.

“Rebel” is sure to be one of those increasingly rare transcendent EPs that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the Rock genres; the sheer uniqueness and thoughtfulness of the songwriting within this two Singles will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners. Shying away from the typical clichés of the plethora of genres that they borrow inspiration from, Ravenscroft has a remarkably unique style and sound which they maintains throughout each track. They certainly veer away the Rock genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, creating a listening experience feels entirely new and unpredictable. “The Chase” and “My Dearest One” ooze with integrity, musical ambition, and fearless creativity. This release is definitely expected to be a trend-setter and will set an unbelievably high standard for indie artists hoping to break through in the scene.

We highly recommend you check out this EP when it hits the airwaves in January 2018. We rate it a MUST LISTEN!

Artist Spotlight: Skaa

Recently, it seems like every new rapper we meet describes themselves similarly. It usually goes something like, “I want to be the next Kanye/Drake/Lamar…” This sentiment is then often uncomfortably showcased in their music as a shameless imitation of their heroes. While it is completely natural to become inspired by your industry forerunners, but you must stray away from riding on their coattails by replicating their distinct sound and style.

This is precisely what Skaa naturally does so well. Upon discovering this artist, we were immediately struck by what may be his strongest asset: his courage to be entirely unapologetic in his assertion of his own unique identity.

The Hip Hop/Rap genre as a whole is one that (especially in recent years with increased accessibility to self-record) can often feel uninspired and frustratingly tired due to the lack of variation, ambition, and innovation applied within the songwriting and production stage. It seems that every week we are introduced to the same regurgitated beat with the same lazy mumble-rap verses and auto-tune saturated hooks—- only to fizzle out into forgetfulness. In fact it’s hard to approach any new music without inherent cynicism and skepticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are exposed to the same formulaic, cookie-cutter, copy of a copy of a copy brand of artists. Although these types of artists have brilliantly perfected the ability to produce safe, catchy, and infectious music; they ultimately amount to being entirely forgettable, soon to be replaced by the next musical doppelgänger. This trend has infected almost every musical appendage and genre, whether it be commercially produced or independently released. Specifically, this pattern has nearly crippled the Rap/ Hip Hop scene.

Not only has Skaa recognized the same tired trend in the music industry, but he has made it a point to aggressively rebel against it. One of the first characteristics that we noticed in Skaa’s tracks that immediately set him apart was his willingness to be vulnerable and honest. Too often, rappers feel the need to push a familiar facade (which at this point, has become a parody of itself), or they mistake humbleness for weakness. Skaa does neither, he has embraced his own personal identity and has made no apologies for it.

The audio production exhibited in the freshly released “Escape” is nothing short of spectacular. The soundscapes are lush and relaxing, the flow is intertwined perfectly with each evolving and ever-changing layer. Everything about the Single is absolutely stunning, with each complex sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. This is truly a milestone and an accomplishment for this artist.

Check out “Escape” here:

The FIRE track entitled opens as the perfect mood-setter. The hard hitting, unapologetic vocals enter immediately carrying emotion and exuding confidence. The track is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, with each layer capturing its own space, but never distracting from each other.

Skaa’s “Escape” is definitely going to take the scene by storm. This track oozes ambition and confidence. Not only is it polished and meticulously crafted, but it is sequenced to perfection, leaving the listener wanting more. This release is definitely a trend-setter and sets an unbelievably high standard for rival artists hoping to break through in the scene.

EP Review: Gibrilville’s “Black Cadillac Season 2”

There comes a time in everyone’s life when revisiting your musical comfort-zone for the umpteenth time just doesn’t cut it anymore. Maybe you’re an avid Pop-Rock fan who loves every familiar power chord progression and every hey-oh chorus. Eventually, a time will come when you just get tired of listening to the same repetitive riffs and uninventive melodies over and over again. This is when you need to step outside of the familiar and leave that musical comfort-zone behind. You simply need to explore new music; your old collection is full of tunes you’ve heard far too many times. When this happens, an artist you should turn to is the true musical trailblazer and undeniable innovator, Gibril “Gibrilville” Mansaray.

Gibrilville has been taking the industry by storm with his alluring artistry, winning multiple Akademia Awards, and making waves with his incredible versatility as an entertainer. Infusing his music with his rich culture and diversity, Gibrilville was originally born in Accra and grew up with his family in Nigeria,Togo, Benin, and Ghana. Exploring his father’s massive record collection at an early age and embracing his older brother’s love for reggae music; Gibrilville acquired a lifelong passion and understanding for music that would later serve as inspiration in carving out his own distinct sound as an artist and performer.

Learn more about Gibrilville’s inspiring story here:

It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music crafted by today’s generation. It seems as if fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy copy of a copy Singles.

While this approach may work well if your goal as an artist is to make fast cash, albeit becoming forgettable, it certainly isn’t the winning formula for industry longevity and lasting notoriety.

The undeniably innovative and wildly ambitious multi-genre, Reggae-inspired Gibrilville is fiercely rebelling against this trend and quickly emerging as fresh musical sensation.

Last year, Gibrilville released his universally acclaimed EP entitled “Black Cadillac Season 1”. Season 1 was mixed by the highly revered  Gordon “Commissioner Gordon” Williams (whose resume includes multiple Grammy Awards and numerous Gold and Platinum albums). The EP rightfully earned Gibrilville his second Akademia award. Now, Gibrilville is back with his highly anticipated follow up EP entitled “Black Cadillac Season 2”.

Listen to the reggae inspired jam track “Jessica”:

Gibrilville is quickly proving that with his addictive, unique, and distinct style; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity” and something much more engaging and immersive. Gibrilville and his band have developed a sound that feels entirely fresh and new. They not only acts as unique innovators; but also effectively channel their vision through an impressive command of the Reggae, R&B, and Hip Hop genres. Avoiding the gimmick he could easily become; Gibrilville stands out among an overpopulated market as a fearless act with a story to tell.

Listen to “Love Me Tonight”:

The audio production exhibited in the freshly released EP is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained. Each layer within each track is uniquely stunning, with each complex sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. The genre is a brilliant fusion of this artist’s influences, with Gibrilville sculpting his own self-defining soundscape. Each track is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains minor mixing and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and add undeniable character to the track. Gibrilville’s approach to songwriting naturally injects his music with integrity and honesty. His confidence in his own story, as well as his embrace of his own style allows his music to easily outshine the rest within the indie-world. His vulnerability in his songwriting makes it much more organic for the listener to connect with his songs on a personal level. These are qualities that are severely lacking within the current industry.

We definitely see this artist continuing to climb the ranks and become a household name, while inspiring a new generation of independent acts.

Gibrilville is a remarkable artist and is definitely a  breath of fresh air within a tired industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. We highly recommend that you dust off your favorite piece and prepare yourself for a wild journey, “Black Cadillac Season 2”” is a MUST LISTEN!
