Simple Ways to Get Your Music Heard – Where to Start?

Releasing a new music album or EP can be a stressful task. There are many questions that come into an artist’s mind while doing so. In this post I will try to give you a solution to all those questions and help you create an effective marketing plan for your music. So without further ado, let’s take a look at some techniques to market your music.
Using a website to promote your music
Registering a domain and publishing updates regarding your music on your website can help you gather a decent audience. Developing a website was never this easy before. Tools like Bandzoogie and WordPress have blogging capabilities, with a number of themes and plugins that you can choose from to design your website as you like.
The key to success of your website is to post regular updates. Share anything that you think will capture the attention of your fans. Basically, you want your followers and fans to visit your webpage as often as possible. This increases the chances of them buying your tickets, albums and merchandise available on your website.

Social media as mean to promote your music
Billions of people use Facebook, Instagram and twitter on a daily basis. You can use these social media giants to target your audience. Social media acts like a catalyst for marketing your music. About 8 out of 10 posts on your page should be fun, interesting and conversational to attract people to your page, the remaining 2 posts should be used for promotional purposes.
The conversational posts can also be promotional! You just have to learn how to mold the content in an interesting way. For example, if you are recording a new album in your studio, try sharing updates regarding it on social media. Share some behind the scenes videos, images or stories with your followers or post a short vine of your unreleased song. These things are not promotional, but help to make new fans and let the existing ones know what is going on.

Email as a promotional tool
An extremely valuable tool in promoting your music is your email list. It is a great way to engage with your current fans. People sign up for your email list so that they can get regular update regarding your music, so take advantage of it! Post links to your website in your emails to drive fans to your web page. Another obvious use of an email list is to inform your fans about your upcoming music and gigs.

Live performance to promote your music
Although digital promotions mentioned above are a good way to gather audience. Nowadays, you can record, release, distribute and promote your music without leaving your room, but we cannot deny the value of person to person interaction, especially in the music industry.

Live shows are much more than performance, they are a way to interact with your fans and promote your music, especially a new album or song. The trick to gather audience is to tell your fans that you will be premiering a new song in one of your shows in the next month and do not tell anyone about the lucky show. By doing this you will create a hype which will lead to increased fan following.

Collaborating with other musicians
Collaboration is an important aspect in the music industry that is often overlooked. It is a way to make new fans and get your music in front of another group of people. You can collaborate on anything but make sure that the fans of musician you are collaborating with appreciate your music. Choose to work with a band of similar genre as yours.

You can also collaborate with some local musicians and perform in their hometown with them to grow your fan base and promote your music.

Join Us at The NYC Indie Rock Festival 2017

Celebrating ten years of outstanding and diverse indie music, the NYC Indie Rock Festival (NYC’s premier indie rock show) returns on September 8 to the Bowery Electric in NYC.

Fieldhouse / BMG artist Chapell is set to headline the 2017 Indie Rock Festival. Fans will enjoy a preview of music from Chapell’s follow-up album to the critically acclaimed Redhead’s Allegations. Joining Chapell at the festival will be power pop band SlyBoots which is fresh off a hugely successful tour of the UK which included headlining the International Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool. The lineup also includes smash rockers White Collar Crime and one of more unique acoustic acts to haunt NYC lower east side over the past decade, the infamous R&B.

Check out the revered headliner Chapell:

Damien Rios, the co-founder of the NYC Indie Rock Festival shared with us that a special guest will be sitting in with the headliner this year. “There’s a few people who were with us when the festival was simply a handful of dudes on a rooftop in Greenpoint who have gone onto much bigger and better things,” says Rios. “One of them has agreed to come back for this year’s festival. It’s a wonderful display of kindness and loyalty to those of us who were there at the beginning of his career” noted Rios.

The NYC Indie Rock Festival 2017 will take place on Friday September 8, 2017 at the Bowery Electric. Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets are available at http://theboweryelectric.ticketfly.com/event/1524841-chapell-sly-boots-white-new-york/.

About the NYC Indie Rock Festival

It all started on a roof top in Greenpoint, Brooklyn near McCarron park back in 2007. A few friends who couldn’t piece together enough cash to get into a music festival being held at the McCarron pool decided that they would hold their own concert on their roof. So they pieced together a PA from the equipment that they had, invited a few bands they knew, and bought a keg of Rheingold. And that end of summer jam session gradually grew in popularity over time. The event really took off a few years later as a number of indie rock giants and celebrities began stopping by to play a few songs. It has now become a must attend event for every indie rock fan in the Northeast. For more information, please email NYCindieRock@gmail.com or visit www.NYCindierock.com

About the Bowery Electric

The Bowery Electric, a rock bar opened in the former Remote Lounge space, is a straightforward affair with a hell of a pedigree. Located on the cusp of Manhattan’s lower east side, the Bowery Electric has become the go to place in NYC to hear live indie music. 327 Bowery, New York, NY 10003.

From the events official statement: This all started on a roof top in Greenpoint, Brooklyn near McCarron park back in 2007. A few friends who couldn’t piece together enough cash to get into a music festival being held at the McCarron pool decided that they would hold their own concert on their roof. So they pieced together a PA from the equipment that they had, invited a few bands they know, and bought a keg. And that end of summer jam session gradually grew over time. The event really took off a few years later when Jeff Mangum stopped by and blew everyone away by playing a few songs.

Over the years the NYC Indie Rock Festival has developed into the premier indie rock festival in NYC. We’ve proudly featured the best and most innovative indie rock acts in NYC.

For our 10th anniversary, we’re moving the event from the rooftops of Brooklyn into Manhattan at the Bowery Electric. The Festival will take place on Friday September 8, 2017.

Artist Spotlight: LENNY

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the wildly innovative and undeniably fearless rockers Lenny through their outstanding new EP effort entitled “Bug”.

The on-the-rise Richmond, Virginia-based rockers have been steadily gaining notoriety for their unorthodox, yet incredibly alluring brand of Rock. Lenny is the brain-child of Rad Burt and Paul Pearce. The new EP, Bug, consists of songs written separately by Rad and Paul prior to forming the band and represent the ‘core’ of the band’s early development.

The band is currently recording new material for a future release. Radcliffe Burt has been writing and performing music since the early 1990’s in Atlanta, Boulder CO and Richmond VA. Influenced by the acoustic music scene built by the Indigo Girls and Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, he formed jangly rock band Millan & Kenzie. After 3 records and 7 years of touring, he relocated to Richmond, VA in 2000 where he formed an acoustic band, The Orderlies, and released one record, ‘Beautiful You’. While recording demos for a solo rock record, he met guitarist Paul Pearce. Lenny came into being  in order to properly develop, record and perform these songs in late 2013.

With independent recording continually growing more affordable and accessible than it ever has been; the industry is quickly becoming over-saturated with hobbyists and fame-seekers. Due to this, it is becoming ever-harder to be noticed within the endless sea of independent noise. The number of new artists entering the industry every day is growing exponentially. With this increase in industry competition, you’d think there would be a “standard” for things you shouldn’t do if you’re trying to become noticed and successful. Unfortunately, this is not the case…in fact, it seems that a vast majority of new artists have taken the lazy route —- copy those whom are more successful than you. You would think that this competitive environment would inspire some artists to go against the grain and carve out their own identity, but this is too often not the case.

The undeniably fearless and musically captivating Lenny are an incredible exception to this rule and are quickly emerging as a refreshing Rock sensation.

Their approach is refreshingly unusual and fascinating, while their music remains curiously relatable and hard hitting. Highly inspired and emotive vocals shine through searing guitar riffs, hypnotic sonic layering, and a wildly groovy rhythm section; making for a diverse and unpredictable musical experience. Their sound is an amazingly varied fusion of genres, while maintaining engaging and intriguing songwriting.Listeners are taken on a sonic journey through a broad spectrum of genres that pays homage to revered legendary and modern rockers; all while adding an entirely unique self-defining twist.

Lenny are fiercely carving out their own distinct musical identity, and restoring the faith of music lovers everywhere.

The band is quickly proving that with their addictive, unique, and highly engaging tunes; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity”, and become something much deeper, more intimate, and immersive.

Each track featured on the EP is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains minor mixing and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and add undeniable character to the track. Lenny consistently surprise and impress with their outstanding instrumentation and with their vocal prowess, displaying a strong command of infectious vocal melodies and lush harmonies. With the powerful and effective backing of guitar, bass, and driving percussion; Lenny prove that their vocal prowess is simply one example of their many strong assets. Impressively, somewhere within these complex and fastidiously crafted tracks there’s a magnificent injection of anthemic, yet unexpected hard-hitting instrumental and vocal pieces and that conjure up a plethora of engaging feelings.

Their approach is refreshingly unusual and fascinating, while their music remains curiously relatable and hard hitting. Highly inspired and emotive vocals shine through searing guitar riffs, brilliant sonic layering, and a wildly groovy rhythm section; making for a diverse and unpredictable musical experience. Their sound is an amazingly varied fusion of genres, while maintaining driving and intriguing songwriting.

BUG is an extended play recording (EP) of 5 original songs. With themes ranging from addiction, lust, the absurdity of social media, life and death in the hospital and forgiveness, the group takes a hard look at individual struggles with each passing day. Deftly avoiding morose or glum passages, the band constructs bright melodies with a solid rock and roll core to drive the message home. Single “Consumes Me”  is about addiction and it’s insinuation within the fabric of life. While we are not a band in recovery, each of us are old enough to have experienced the consequences – directly or otherwise – of an illness that claims so many. The refrain, ‘I want to escape…escaping’, is the feedback loop that springs the trap. If that weren’t enough, Rad’s blistering guitar solo ends like a car skidding off the highway…and is no accident.

Lenny are a remarkable act and an amazing breath of fresh air within an industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. We can definitely see this band continuing their rise and becoming a household name and inspiring a new generation of independent artists. “BUG” is a MUST LISTEN!

Exclusive Interview: Aastik Koshy of Blue Magic Records

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the wildly innovative and incredibly ambitious Aastik Koshy (founder of the newly acclaimed electronic, experimental and chill out record label Blue Magic Records.)

Blue Magic Records (BMR) label was founded in the state of North Goa in early 2017 as a sub-label to Turquoise Sound Pvt.Ltd. It is an electronic experimental and chillout label with free form and unconventional styles of music including jazz / fusion and ethno–classical electronica music.

Aastik was able to sit down with us and provide better insight into what makes Blue Magic Records such a groundbreaking and unique label.

SMP: Now that we are more than halfway through 2017, what are some words you would use to describe this year? What have been some of the highlights for the label? What’s in store for the rest of 2017 for Blue Magic Records?

Aastik Koshy: BMR© is a new label in progress. We are well underway with many new projects and releases with collaborations and solo albums filled with offbeat, eclectic and eccentric choices. Amazing, lively and productive, would be some ways to describe the label.

How did Blue Magic Records first come to be? Can you talk about the formation of this company?

Blue Magic Records© is a part of‘Turquoise Sound Pvt Ltd (TSC)’ that I founded while working as a producer, composer and sound design artist. Set up in 2015,TSC serves as a vehicle for my numerous music creations and collaborations, to be curated and released in a structured way, with office and studio based on an idyllic organic farm in North-Goa, India. Blue is beautiful. The vastness of the sky is our creative inspiration, the blue sea shows us limitless power and the sheer magic of music fuse together perfectly here in the sunny little state of Goa! BMR© follows a different aesthetic from the Lounge,Electronica and jazz chill out styles  released through TSC, and is unique in it’s approach to breaking conventional norms. We encourage our performing artists to be their creative best with us.

How has the environment that you work in influenced how you conduct your label?

The environment is pure, organic and conducive to the artists creative flow. The label uses this approach to its core functionalities and remains true to the musical freedom it stands for.

Have you embraced the surrounding culture and has it informed your business ethos?

BMR uses a universal approach to creating its music. Our collaborating artists appreciate the integration of the cultural ambience surrounding BMR in its approach, functionality and ethics. We concern ourselves with individual artistic growth to create our music, and this comes from the observation of the fluidness of nature.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

The label would be hard to define with just one song. Each of our tracks crafted will definitely leave the listener quite surprised and curious about the next track! . A few to look out for are Aastik Koshy-Interdimentional Butterfly’,’Inhabited Stars-Journey I’ and ‘InternalEye-Cyclic’.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

A constant change in the way music is perceived and produced is vital. With  change being the only constant, it comes across as an organic way of expression when this flow is applied, almost like a universal source of endless possibilities.  Apart from fearless experimentation we attempt to be as prolific an artist as one can, and thats what we try to achieve with every track we present to our audience.Everyday and every moment to the artist is different, and the label believes the music released should be a reflection of these limitless possibilities.

Any upcoming releases your way?

Projects under Blue Magic Records to look out for right now are

INTERNALEYE (Rohit Bushan), his music is a melting pot of deep and emotionally charged soundscapes, lush, ambient textures and new-age grooves.A sensory delight capable of transporting listeners to surreal territory bound only by one’s imagination. His new album on BMR. titled ‘Garden Of Stars’ is an eclectic journey through emotionally charged chilled beats and lush dreamscapes. This album is filled with electronic goodness, following a downtempo and emotive-chill sound, its nothing short of inspiring.InternalEye has been an artist to look out for in his field of music, and BMR is the chosen stream for this particular sound.’Garden Of Stars’ is the perfect album for those lazy hazy evenings just as much as early mornings. This album is recorded at InternalEye SoundLab,Mumbai and Mastered by Turquoise Sound Pvt. Ltd.

INHABITED STARS – a BMR © music collective formed in 2017  by Aastik Koshy featuring different artists with each release while showcasing different forms of music. The first release is a mix of ambient bliss with heavy shifting dnb inspired electronica and touches of psychedelic influences. The first instalment in the series named ‘Journey I-VII’ features collaborations with artists such as V3K,a genre bending artist responsible for some of the best combinations of ethinc music and electronica. Freakuency,an experimental sound designer who works on psychedelic projects apart from his avant-garde creations is another artist to look out for.Frequent collaborator and musical advisor AshkaFlutes is a part of the project and brings touches of ethereal flute to the mix in the first track. Recorded at Turquoise Studio A (Ch Island) North,Goa/Glitch Studio (Blr)/Freakuency Lab (Kodai) and Mastered by Turquoise Sound Pvt.Ltd
