Artist Spotlight: Winds & Walls

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know the alternative post-hardcore, indie-rock sensation “WINDS & WALLS”.

WINDS & WALLS has been making waves in the indie music scene for their incredibly unique and alluring brand of music. It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music where It seems as though fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy tunes. Powerful messaging and honest content in music has been sadly lost due to this trend; it is growing more and more apparent that the main driving force  behind many new “artists” entering the industry is simply a thirst for fame and money.

WINDS & WALLS makes no attempt to conform to these market tastes and trends— and this is precisely what makes them such a respectable and remarkable act.

This brilliant band acts as a marvelous innovator in the indie-world, and they effectively channel their dealbum, emotive, and resonating vision through an impressive display of creative songwriting and inventive musical arrangements. With their fun, relatable, and highly inventive tunes; WINDS & WALLS has reignited the approach that music, as an artistic medium, should transcend the label of “commodity” and become something much more immersive and engaging. The band is unapologetically committed to supporting their shared vision with their tools of artistic expression, rather than exploiting them for the cash-grabbing gimmick that they can so easily become.

“Satellites” is definitely one of those increasingly rare transcendent Albums that doesn’t abide by the typical genre limitations and standards. Regardless of your specific musical tastes, regardless of any bias or animosity that you may have against the indie genres; the sheer honesty and thoughtfulness of the songwriting within this album will inspire and ignite applause and appreciation out of even the most reluctant listeners. It is a tireless listening experience and effortlessly maintains your interest throughout.

Opening track “Parallel Universe (Part I)” particularly stands out upon first listen. The sonic landscape crafted within this track alone fully encapsulates the dynamic nature of the Album as a whole. The track showcases a swaying fusion of sound that feels intimately roomy, well-balanced and evocative, with a great focus on gorgeous harmonies and infectious melodies. The sounds resonate, merge and surround the listener in a sort of sonic ecstasy while maintaining a strong driving beat. “Satellites” stands out as an immediate favorite of mine. The track is very vibrant and modern-sounding, yet it maintains its own identity perfectly. There is definitely something for everyone here. Each track featured on the album is fantastically sequenced in a way that maintains the listener’s interest, and contains minor mixing and instrumental intricacies that are both unique and add undeniable character to the track.

Check out “Parallel Universe (Part I)”:

WINDS & WALLS are a remarkable act and an amazing breath of fresh air within an industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. WINDS & WALLS, in my honest opinion, has the potential to go down as one of those rare bands whom helped change the musical landscape, and will fondly remembered among some of the most groundbreaking independent acts.We can definitely see this band continuing their rise and becoming a household name, while inspiring a new generation of independent artists. Not only do they have the ability to craft infectious vocal hooks and melodies, but they does so with a remarkably unique blending of genres and evident care for messaging and content. “Satellites” is a MUST LISTEN!

Artist Spotlight: Shawn Michael

Recently, it seems like every new rapper or Hip Hop artist we meet describes themselves similarly. It usually goes something like, “I want to be the next Kanye/Drake/Lamar…” This sentiment is then often uncomfortably showcased in their music as a shameless imitation of their heroes. While it is completely natural to become inspired by your industry forerunners, but you must stray away from riding on their coattails by replicating their distinct sound and style.

This is precisely what Shawn Michael naturally does so well. Upon discovering this artist, we were immediately struck by what may be his strongest asset: his courage to be entirely unapologetic in his assertion of his own unique identity.

Check out “Party2nite”:

The Hip Hop/Rap genre as a whole is one that (especially in recent years with increased accessibility to self-record) can often feel uninspired and frustratingly tired due to the lack of variation, ambition, and innovation applied within the songwriting and production stage. It seems that every week we are introduced to the same regurgitated beat with the same lazy mumble-rap verses and auto-tune saturated hooks—- only to fizzle out into forgetfulness. In fact it’s hard to approach any new music without inherent cynicism and skepticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are exposed to the same formulaic, cookie-cutter, copy of a copy of a copy brand of artists. Although these types of artists have brilliantly perfected the ability to produce safe, catchy, and infectious music; they ultimately amount to being entirely forgettable, soon to be replaced by the next musical doppelgänger. This trend has infected almost every musical appendage and genre, whether it be commercially produced or independently released. Specifically, this pattern has nearly crippled the Rap/ Hip Hop scene.

Not only has Shawn Michael recognized the same tired trend in the music industry, but he has made it a point to aggressively rebel against it.

One of the first characteristics that we noticed in Shawn Michael’s tracks that immediately set him apart was his willingness to be fun and provocative. Too often, rappers feel the need to push a familiar facade (which at this point, has become a parody of itself), or they mistake humbleness for weakness. Shawn Michael does neither, he has embraced his own personal identity and has made no apologies for it. This track is no doubt a club banger. Not only is it polished and meticulously crafted, but it is sequenced to perfection, leaving the listener wanting more. This artist is definitely a trend-setter and sets an unbelievably high standard for indie Hip Hop/EDM artists hoping to break through in the scene.

Its pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody so incredibly versatile and talented behind the mic (and so brilliantly selective with the production). Shying away from the typical clichés of both of the genres that he borrows inspiration from, Shawn Michael has a remarkably unique style and sound which he maintains throughout his tracks. While Shawn Michael certainly pays homage to the greats; he frequently veers away the genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, making the listening experience feel entirely new and unpredictable.

This is definitely an artist you CAN’T IGNORE!

Artist spotlight: Wuapo

With independent recording continually growing more affordable and accessible than it ever has been; the industry is quickly becoming over-saturated with hobbyists and crowded with wannabes. Due to this, it is becoming ever-harder to be noticed within the endless sea of independent noise. The number of new hip-hop artists entering the industry every day is growing exponentially. With this increase in industry competition, you’d think there would be a “standard” for things you shouldn’t do if you’re trying to become noticed and successful. Unfortunately, this is not the case…in fact, it seems that a vast majority of new artists have taken the lazy route — copy those whom are more successful than you.

Wuapo has fiercely rebelled against this current trend; presenting something innovative and unique, yet entirely approachable and digestible.

It is completely natural to become inspired by your industry forerunners, but you must stray away from riding on their coattails by replicating their distinct sound and style. This is precisely what this artist naturally does so well. Upon discovering Wuapo, we were immediately struck by what may be his strongest asset: his courage to be entirely unapologetic in his assertion of his own unique identity. This shines radiantly on his newest Single entitled “I Just Wanna”.

Artist Spotlight: Cadillac Muzik

When approaching nearly all newly independent-released music, it’s hard to do so without inherent cynicism and skepticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are continuously exposed to these same formulaic, cookie-cutter, brand of artists. The most unfortunate result of this trend is the stifling of musical ambition and the lack of innovation to set oneself apart in the industry.

While this approach may work well if your goal as an artist is to make fast cash, albeit becoming forgettable, it certainly isn’t the winning formula for industry longevity and lasting notoriety.

In a refreshing twist, the wildly ambitious Hip Hop group Cadillac Muzik is fiercely rebelling against this trend and quickly emerging as indie hip hop sensations.

The caddy boys have recently dropped another funky fresh up tempo Hip Hop/R&B track called “No Tomorrow.” The song is paying homage to the early 90’s Hip Hop bands such as Digital Underground, Kid N Play, De La Soul, Heavy D & The Boyz, New Edition, Joe Public, ATCQ, etc. The band’s image, creativity, and artistry in general hasn’t been seen in the music industry since the golden era of the 90’s. Cadillac Muzik literally brings the funk and soul back with a mixture of heavy drums, big bass, and smooth melodic vocal harmonies. All of this blends together to bring an energized 70’s/90’s yet modern feeling style. This is the first song off of their upcoming project titled Lac Gospel.

Check out “No Tomorrow” :

Cadillac Muzik has developed a sound that feels entirely fresh and new. This brilliant group not only act as unique innovators; but they also effectively channel their vision through an impressive command of the Hip Hop genre. Avoiding the gimmick they could easily become; Cadillac Muzik stands out among an overpopulated market as fearless and honest artists with a story to tell.

Artist Spotlight: L.HUNT

It is an unfortunate reality in the current world of music crafted by today’s generation. It seems as if fearless, ambitious artists are becoming more and more rare and undiscovered. This is mostly due to an unapologetic desire by most new-coming artists to shamelessly reach into existing successful markets, void of any integrity, and follow an incredibly safe musical formula of commercially appealing and catchy copy of a copy Singles.

While this approach may work well if your goal as an artist is to make fast cash, albeit becoming forgettable, it certainly isn’t the winning formula for industry longevity and lasting notoriety.

In a refreshing twist, the undeniably fearless and musically ambitious artist, L.HUNT is fiercely rebelling against this trend and quickly emerging as an experimental sensation.

Listen for yourself with L.HUNT’s alluring “Shadows and Echoes” :

L.HUNT is quickly proving that with his provocative, unique, and highly unorthodox tunes; music, as an artistic medium, can transcend the label of “commodity” and become something much more intimate and immersive.

In his living concept album “LifeWork: Passage One – The Question”, L.HUNT explores the relationships between music, written word, theatre production and art in a non-traditional and personally unique way. It is evident that he has worked tirelessly to craft his own distinct style and approach. Showcasing an entirely new sound that marries the drama of theatre with the more traditional songwriting styles of Rock, L.HUNT has contributed to the “Rock Opera” genre in a way that sounds entirely fresh and new.

The audio production exhibited in each of the Singles so far is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is ferociously dynamic and unrestrained; we imagine this must have been very challenging to mix. Each track is uniquely stunning, with each complex sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. The genre is brilliantly undefinable, with L.HUNT sculpting his own self-defining soundscape.

Check out  “Shadows in the Mind’s Eye”:

Discovering the rock opera “LifeWork: Passage One – The Question” by L.HUNT was truly an engaging and worthwhile experience. This differs from most recent indie releases in that it is fearlessly ambitious and unapologetically unique and difficult to label. Not only is it polished and meticulously crafted, but it is sequenced to perfection, leaving the listener wanting more. Single Spotlight: Skaa’s “Calling”

This wildly versatile artist is based in Boston, and has taken on the undeniable challenge of being a fully DIY independent artist. We previously had the pleasure of getting to know this incredibly ambitious artist, and we were beyond impressed (check out our other feature here and here). We find that one of the most glaring setbacks for new-coming independent artists is the lack of professional mixing and mastering that is necessary to break through into the mainstream markets. This certainly isn’t the case with Skaa.

Check out “Escape” here:

It is an extremely rare occurrence that we are introduced to an independent artist that absolutely blows our minds; Skaa has done this over and over again.

Check out Skaa’s newest Single “Better Days”:

If you are familiar with Skaa’s back-catalog, his remarkable versatility and clever unpredictability is always on full display. His impressive arrangements, creative sequencing, masterful songwriting, and unstoppable flow are undeniably alluring and captivating. The audio production exhibited in the freshly released “Calling” is nothing short of spectacular. This is especially remarkable considering the music itself is dynamic and unrestrained. The soundscapes are complex and interesting, and the pointed raps are intertwined perfectly with each evolving and ever-changing layer

Check out “Calling” here:

The mix itself is absolutely stunning, with each unique sonic layer given space to breath and evolve. A truly arduous task for anyone defiantly accepting the challenge of being TRULY independent. This risk has undeniable paid off, as the tracks showcased here are alluringly fresh and entirely unique. The genre is brilliantly undefinable, with Skaa sculpting his own self-defining soundscape and style.

This is truly a milestone and an accomplishment for this artist. When approaching newly released music, it’s hard to do so without inherent criticism. It has become tiresome and mundane within the current culture of Pop dominated music. We, as listeners, are exposed to the same formulaic, cookie-cutter, copy of a copy of a copy brand of artists. Though these types of artists have brilliantly perfected the ability to produce safe, catchy, and infectious music; they ultimately amount to being entirely forgettable— certain to be replaced by the next musical clone.

We stand by what we have said before; It’s pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody so incredibly versatile and talented behind the mic (and so brilliantly selective with the production). Shying away from the typical clichés of the genres that he borrows inspiration from, Skaa has a remarkably unique style and sound which he maintains throughout these early tracks. While Skaa certainly pays homage to the greats; he frequently veers away the genre’s increasingly tired tendencies, making the listening experience feel entirely new and unpredictable.

Indie Interview Series: Rainy Day Crush

Rainy Day Crush recently released the outstanding new EP entitled “I’m Still Alive”. The EP showcases a sound that is refreshing and passionate, while the content of the music remains entirely relatable and hard hitting. Versatile vocals shine through alluring guitar-work, masterful lead electric guitar, while a wildly groovy rhythm section adds undeniable character to each track. This makes for a wildly diverse and lively musical experience. Read our full review here

Check out “Heartbreak (or How to Get Over it)”:

We were so impressed by the creativity and thoughtfulness showcased within their newest EP, that we just had to learn more about this incredible band. Rainy Day Crush were kind enough to take the time to answer some of our questions.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Answer: I think one of the things I’ve always liked about Rainy Day Crush is that every song gets constructed in a different way. Some will start with a drum beat, some will start with a lyric or poem, and some will start with a guitar or piano lick or riff that kinda sticks in your head. I think what we do overall is that as we’re building a song, we try to figure out the overall vibe of each song, and try to stick to that. Instead of making the song sound like Rainy Day Crush, we make Rainy Day Crush sound like the song.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer: We love love LOVE playing live! Recording is fun, but it’s a slower process. Live is exciting and scary the way a roller coaster is exciting. You can f**k up, you can stick your foot in your mouth, you can fall off the stage. It’s dangerous, which makes it fun. Playing live is why you start a band.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer: Oh, s**t, this is the toughest question ever! But it’s also a question you kind of have to answer every time you send your music out. I would say that right now, “Heartbreak (or How to Get Over It)” is probably our best first impression. We love the melodies and harmonies and riffs, the lyrics are really honest and personal, the guitars and drums are big and cranking… It’s got a lot of the elements we really like. “No Such Thing” is a super close second, though, because I think that song shows our more playful side. We’re a pretty playful band.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer: Listen to your inner voice. No one can copy that voice, or imitate that voice, or do that voice better than you. Stick to that voice, because no one else has it, and that’s what will set you apart.

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Answer: We are just starting to look at doing some recording, which is exciting. And we’re trying to book shows. Like I said, we love playing live, and we want to be playing out as much as possible. We’re also looking at releasing a lyric video for “No Such Thing”

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Answer: To find out more about us, we’re all over the various social media platforms like Facebook Facebook.com/RainyDayCrush and Twitter twitter.com/RDCband and Instagram instagram.com/RainyDayCrush. To listen, we’re on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/4Xt8VsSrTL9Nv9KHBxCdpF and iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/im-still-alive-ep/1234390039 and BandCamp https://rainydaycrush.bandcamp.com/album/im-still-alive and SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/rainydaycrush. Rainy Day Crush are a remarkable act and an amazing breath of fresh air within an industry that has become overly saturated with copycat artists whose sole goal is to cash in on an increasingly uninventive formula. We can definitely see this band continuing their rise and becoming a household name, while inspiring a new generation of independent artists. Not only do they have the ability to craft infectious vocal hooks and melodies, but they does so with a remarkably unique blending of genres and evident care for messaging and content. “I’m Still Alive” is a MUST LISTEN!
